"Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." > — Matthew 5:9
In a world filled with division, chaos, and conflict, it is easy to find ourselves caught in the noise. Everywhere we look, there are disagreements whether on social media, in the news, or even within our personal communities. Yet, in His powerful Sermon on the Mount, Jesus offers us a radically different way to live. He calls us to a high and holy calling: to be peacemakers.
What Does it Mean to Be a Peacemaker?
Being a peacemaker is much deeper than simply keeping the peace or avoiding conflict. True, biblical peace—Shalom—is not just the absence of tension; it is the presence of wholeness, reconciliation, and the love of God.
A peacemaker doesn't stand by passively when things go wrong. Instead, a peacemaker actively works to step into broken situations, bridge gaps, mend fractured relationships, and extend the grace that we ourselves have received from the Father.
The Identity of a Peacemaker
Jesus promises a beautiful reward for those who seek peace: "they shall be called the children of God."
When we choose love over hatred, forgiveness over resentment, and unity over discord, we are reflecting the very character of God. God is a God of peace, and Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Therefore, when we actively actively bring peace into our surrounding environments, we prove who our Father is. We shine a light that lets the world know we belong to Him.
Becoming Instruments of His Peace
As we meditate on Matthew 5:9, let our prayer as a church family be focused on transformation:
"May we be instruments of God's peace in a world that needs His love."
How can you be a peacemaker today?
In your speech: Choose words that build up rather than tear down.
In your relationships: Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and fast to forgive.
In your prayers: Lift up those who are hurting and ask God to use you to bring comfort and healing to someone's life.

This verse teaches that those who actively work to bring peace whether between people, within communities, or in their own hearts are living in a way that reflects God’s character. God is the source of peace, so when we promote reconciliation instead of conflict, we show that we belong to Him. Being called “children of God” means we are recognized as part of His family because we mirror His nature of love, forgiveness, and harmony.
