The Only Appetite That Never Leaves You Empty

Watch to find out why hungering for righteousness is the only pursuit guaranteed to never leave you empty.

We live in a culture obsessed with filling empty spaces. We scroll to fill a quiet moment, buy things to fill a void, and chase achievements to feel whole. Yet, how many times have you finally ordered that meal, landed that job, or bought that item, only to find the satisfaction fading before the day is even over?

There is a distinct difference between being full and being satisfied.

In His most famous sermon, Jesus addresses this exact human dilemma with a paradox that turns our definition of fulfillment completely upside down:

"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." > — Matthew 5:6

The Paradox of the Appetite

When you are physically hungry, it hurts. It’s a signal of lack. In the ancient world, hunger and thirst weren’t just minor inconveniences remedied by a quick trip to the fridge; they were matters of survival.

Jesus uses this intense, physical craving to describe what our spiritual lives should look like. But notice the target of the hunger: righteousness.

He doesn't say, "Blessed are those who achieve righteousness," or "Blessed are those who are perfect." He blesses the appetite.

Righteousness, in its truest sense, means alignment. It means being in a right relationship with God, treating others with justice and love, and living the way God intended the world to work. To hunger for it means your soul aches to see God’s goodness come to life in you and in the world around you.

Why Your Current Diet Isn't Working

The problem isn't that we aren't hungry; it's that we are feeding our souls junk food.

  • We substitute the pursuit of holiness with the pursuit of happiness.

  • We trade eternal satisfaction for temporary comfort.

When we feed on approval, success, or material things, we experience a spiritual sugar crash. We are left emptier than before. Jesus is offering a radical alternative: if you change what you crave, you will finally get what you’ve been looking for.

The Promise: You Will Be Filled

The beauty of Matthew 5:6 is the guarantee. In this life, if you hunger for wealth, you might never get enough. If you hunger for fame, you’ll constantly need more.

But if you hunger for righteousness? You are guaranteed to be filled.

God never ignores a starving soul. When we desire His ways, His character, and His presence above all else, He meets us there. He fills us with peace that doesn't make sense, joy that isn't dependent on our circumstances, and a purpose that doesn't expire.

Shift Your Appetite Today

How do we practically begin to hunger and thirst for the right things? It starts with what we consume daily.

What We Often Feast On

How to Shift to Righteousness

The Noise of Culture: Constant news, social comparison, and entertainment.

The Word of God: Quiet time spent in Scripture to realign your mind.

Self-Reliance: Trying to fix everything and control every outcome.

Prayer & Surrender: Admitting your need for God's strength and direction.

Self-Interest: Focus on personal comfort and getting ahead.

Justice & Mercy: Actively seeking to serve others and love your neighbor.

A Prayer for the Hungry

If you feel spiritually exhausted or empty today, take a moment to reset your appetite. You don't have to have it all figured out; you just have to want Him.

“Father, I admit that I’ve been trying to fill my life with things that leave me empty. Change my appetite. Help me to hunger and thirst for Your righteousness above all else. I trust Your promise that You will fill me. Amen.”

Jesus blesses the desire for righteousness, not those who think they’ve already achieved it.
